Incident Overview

Level Finance was exploited, resulting in the loss of 214,000 $LVL tokens worth approximately 2,780,320 $USD.

Level Finance is a decentralized perpetual exchange running on the Binance Smart Chain. The project suffered an exploit that had targeted their Referral Controller Contract. The attacker could claim referral amounts as $LVL tokens multiple times by executing multiple transactions to drain the contract.

As a result, 214k LVL tokens were drained from the contract and swapped for 3,345 $BNB which is equivalent to 1,097,160 $USD at current prices. All stolen funds remain controlled by the hacker who initiated this attack using the address: `0x61bb...412e` and holds them on another address: `0x7031...a9d5`. Fortunately, LPs and DAO treasury remained unaffected by this exploit since it was isolated from other contracts.

What the Attacker Needed to Succeed

Understanding the prerequisites for this type of attack helps auditors identify protocols that are most at risk and helps developers build better defenses.

Technical Knowledge Deep understanding of other and Solidity and EVM internals
Capital Required Seed capital to cover gas and initial position setup
On-Chain Access Ability to interact with smart contracts and deploy a custom exploit contract
Protocol Analysis Identification of the exploitable vulnerability in Level Finance's contract logic - root cause: exchange (dex)
Execution Speed Precise transaction ordering and timing to exploit the vulnerability within a single atomic block
Obfuscation Plan A strategy to launder and move stolen funds - typically through mixers, cross-chain bridges, or decentralized DEX swaps to resist tracing

What Auditors Should Check

Could this have been caught in audit? Likely — with a thorough Other audit checklist and test coverage
Audited by Quantstamp — still lost $1.1M. Prior audits don't guarantee safety, especially after post-audit code changes.

If you're auditing a protocol with similar architecture to Level Finance, these are the critical security checks that could have prevented this incident (May 2023).

  • Verify all logic paths related to Other are guarded by proper access controls and input validation
  • Review privileged functions (owner, admin, governance) for potential abuse vectors - centralization risks should be documented and bounded with timelocks or multi-sigs
