What happened

Lykke said its exchange infrastructure was attacked on June 4, 2024. Researchers observed withdrawals of 158 BTC and 2,161 ETH, while contemporary reporting placed the loss above $22 million. The exchange shut down affected systems and paused deposits and withdrawals.

Technical root cause

The public statement did not identify the initial access path or demonstrate a particular private-key theft mechanism. Its commitment to protect clients did not establish completed recovery.

How it happened

  1. An attacker gained unauthorized access to Lykke's infrastructure or wallet operations through an undisclosed route.
  2. Exchange wallets sent out BTC and ETH.
  3. Lykke disabled affected systems and said it had examined and addressed the breaches.
