Mixin Network Hack
Incident Overview
Mixin Network was exploited due to a cloud service vulnerability, resulting in a loss of $142,041,764 in digital assets across Ethereum and Bitcoin chains.
Mixin Network is a decentralized network for transferring digital assets. On September 23, 2023, the network was exploited due to a cloud service vulnerability. The attacker managed to steal funds from multiple addresses on both the Ethereum and Bitcoin chains.
The stolen funds were then swapped to DAI and Ethereum on the attacker's wallets on the Ethereum network, totaling approximately $118.66M as of September 26th. In the Bitcoin chain, the attacker accumulated 891 BTC, worth around $23,381,764. The total loss across both chains was approximately $142,041,764.

What Auditors Should Check
If you're auditing a protocol with similar architecture to Mixin Network, these are the critical security checks that could have prevented this incident (September 2023).
- Verify all logic paths related to Database Attack / Other are guarded by proper access controls and input validation
- Review privileged functions (owner, admin, governance) for potential abuse vectors - centralization risks should be documented and bounded with timelocks or multi-sigs
