What happened

NiceHash reported a security breach on 6 December 2017 in which its payment system was compromised and the contents of its Bitcoin wallet stolen. Contemporary and later reporting put the theft at about 4,700 BTC, then valued near $64 million.

How it happened

  1. NiceHash detected a breach affecting its website and payment system.
  2. The attacker removed Bitcoin from the company wallet.
